045: Crazy Jack- Jack Northam has summited Mt Whitney over 150 times

October 26, 2017

Show Notes

Jack tells us how he got into the outdoors and some great stories from his summits of Mt Whitney, sometimes summiting twice in one day!

First Exposure to the Outdoors

I was in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970 and my wife and I got married in 68. I married into her family and she had two brothers and two more sisters so five kids. She was a preacher's kid so father Sadler who was his name, he would take church groups up into the Sierras and I mean it was quite an undertaking. I was invited obviously to go along and it's my first real experience in the Sierras and the backcountry. I remember hiking in my heavy heavy-duty boots, I had a 10 pound mummy bag, what an experience. I guess that opened the door.

Advice, tips

You could just start today by just putting on your walking shoes and walk around the block yes nothing else I mean people ask me all the time well how do you get in shape get off you know yeah you just have to go out and start you start so slow and then you know you progress and you feel good and then you might even need to check in with your doctor to make sure you know what you're trying to do but but still it's a matter of just getting up and getting going.

I hope other people get out. If it's not the Sierras get somewhere else do something else. It's out there for us to adventure into and I hope that's something that they get from this . . . just go!

I had the honor of meeting Jack today while waiting for my husband and daughter plus 2 friends who are a super awesome group of 4 hikers. Jack is so very dedicated and the best part is he isn’t alone! He has a wonderful wife of over 50 years and I must applaud them both for their being together and able and willing to repeat what most of us would call “bucket list” hike. To the tune of 189times. Would have been 190 but he fell 2 days prior and had stitches in his eyebrow. His battle wound from trip 189. He is amazing and his wife, well she is a saint as far as I’m concerned. I’m in awe of them and greatly inspired to venture more deeply with my husband who just happens to be the same age as Jack. If they can, we can at least try.
