Maura grew up in the midwest and was an English Teacher for many years. Never went back to teaching after she had kids and joined the family business, Water Stone Outdoor
first exposure to the outdoors
Maura was 7-8 years old she was running down a trail in Backbone State Park and realized “this is my feel good right here: and was hooked on the outdoors.
Her first outdoor job was as a Whitewater Guide
Things we talked about
Water Stone bought the 2 Blue Ridge Outdoor Stores and has been operant 362 days a year for over 23 years. The Blue Ridge locations were changed to Water Stone in about 1996
Water Stone is a traditional outdoor store with a strong emphasis on climbing.
New River Mountain Guides and a small local resoling business operate out of Water Stone.
The boating business
On line retail as a small retailer
Events such as the Patagonia Worn Wear tour, their own Appalachian Outdoor Film Festival and the New River Alliance Rendezvous
What Maura loves best about the outdoor industry is the sharing of the outdoor and how they have the opportunity turn a newbie into an outdoor enthusiast
